On the night of April 20, 2010, the culmination of a series of events began the most devastating disaster known to the Gulf of Mexico. That drilling rig blowout initiated the most serious accidental oil spill ever experienced in North America. The unstaunched flow of oil from 5000 feet deep in the Gulf would go unchecked for weeks and the ensuing cleanup and aftermath will continue for months, more likely years, following the capping of that well. The natural tendency of man is to assign blame, demand retribution, and expect unrealistic response. From those responsible the natural response is to fix the problem with as little cost as possible while minimizing the long term effects to profit and liability. Both responses are to be expected - in the flesh. However there are always unseen forces at work - in the Spirit.
Our land needs healing.
God said (when disaster strikes) … if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Chronicles 7:13
The fervor of disaster naturally brings with it an unquenchable need to "prove the right". That inevitably breeds disagreement. Not normal disagreement, but disagreement elevated to a heightened level. Pride dictates the parameters of the conflict and fear pushes the limits. The result is plain and simple - argument.
Our arguments stand in the way.
The Apostle Paul wrote - … For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. Corinthians 10:4-6
But to satisfy the desperate need to argue there must be an adversary, not a difficult target to locate in the midst of such a major disaster.
Find me someone on the "other" side.
… and …. our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:12-13
When all easy targets have been successfully humiliated and decimated - go to the top where the buck stops. That must be the one responsible. If not for the disaster then surely for the response and my pain.
Where can we put the ultimate blame?
The Proverbs tell us - The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases. Proverbs 21:1
Are we truly powerless?
Man’s ability to solve, react to, and outpace disaster is obviously not sufficient as evidenced by the recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. “We the people” need representation that is capable of changing the very course of nature and reversing the effects of man’s wrongs. That can only be found within the wisdom and providence of God. Not just any God but the only True and Living God who has revealed Himself to us through the life and work of Jesus Christ.
The Word of God gives us a map for deliverance and healing as found above in 2 Chronicles 7:12. Based on the prescription outlined, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you can have a dramatic impact on our land by joining others in the Body of Christ in prayer.
PrayForOurCoast.org is an effort to bring that prayer focus together at 10am and 2 pm daily to effect the healing of our land.
What you can do-
Set your cell phone alarm for 10am & 2pm
Stop what you and those around you are doing
Pray for one minute at those times asking God to;
1. Give us humility,
2. Reveal Himself to us,
3. Forgive our sins,
4. Heal our land, &
5. Guide the hearts of our leaders in righteousness and wisdom.
Almighty and Holy Father, hear our prayer, heal our land, and guide those you have set in place to govern us. Amen
